The 1st Chakra

Holding SpaceThe first chakra, also known as the root chakra is located at the base of your spine. If you were to sit on the floor cross-legged, it would line up perfectly to root into the ground. And, as you can imagine, the energy it processes, is your ability to function in the physical world. This comes down to how you relate to society, your family or cultural group; how secure you feel maneuvering within the world and your own personal ability to survive. It oversees the base of your instinctual abilities and self-preservation.

Whenever there is an excess or deficiency of energy in any chakra, an imbalance is created. In the first chakra center, this can include emotional symptoms such as apathy, lethargy, lack of confidence, worry, anxiety, depression, selfishness, anger, hostility, aggression, greed and sexual inhibitions or perversions. Its negative influences include; fear of death, abandonment, humiliation and intimacy. When the imbalance is in place over long periods of time, the areas of emotional unrest begin to influence the physical body. When first chakra imbalances manifest into the physical body, it is found in the spine, the bones, the immune system, nervous system, blood, vagina, testes, rectum, lower limbs, legs and feet.

Working through the issues of the first chakra in order to keep it in balance means moving beyond worries of survival and physical preoccupation. There is a need to face, accept and release unresolved family issues, matters of overall health, security and trust. The positive attributes this chakra brings, includes internal strength, endurance, abundance, steadfastness and longevity. Bringing the first chakra into balance will bring about a relaxed attitude of life and a sense of well-being. This allows one to become more grounded and focused on your life’s direction and more comfortable to open up with others around you. It opens the door to emotional expression and welcomes growth through vulnerability and authenticity.
